Public Speaking 101: Engage Your Audience

I received a weekly newsletter from a company I truly enjoy, Eloqui. Eloqui focuses on improving communication practices for businesses and speaker training for individuals!  This week’s newsletter featured a wonderful tip for anyone that has ever had to speak in front of a crowd.

They said, “A damaging tendency of speakers is to include facts, data, or background that is true, but useless (TBU)”. Having too many TBU statements is a quick way to loose your crowd’s attention, ultimately disengaging the audience. But how do you engage an audience?

Here are two ways I keep my audience captivated:

  1. Use a Pitch: As a public speaker it is your job to persuade your audience. Have an agenda and sell it!
  2. Entertain: It seems fairly simple but simply entertaining your audience will win their attention. You can use a joke, prop or video, think outside of the box and have fun because when you have fun so will your audience

Do you have another tip for engaging an audience? Please leave a comment, I’d love to hear about it!
