Good Advice from a Great Speaker
I subscribe to a newsletter produced by Dewitt Jones, photographer for National Geographic and public speaker. Jones recently did a guest spot on Real Recognition Radio, an internet radio show that focuses on building relationships and sharing workplace advice. Approximately twenty-seven minutes into the interview Jones supplies the audience with an absolute gem piece of advice about becoming a better public speaker.
Jones says, “When you’re trying to make a difference (while public speaking), the supposition is that you know what people need. You’re not asking, ‘how can I help you?’ Instead you’re saying ‘let me tell you what you need to do to improve’.”
Jones suggests that the best way to connect with an audience is to offer information that you have learned through life lessons.
Next time you’re speaking try to share your best learning experiences rather than pointers for success. You just might find that you engage more people!
